Drivetrain System

This post will discuss the Mi-17 Drivetrain system.

Main Transmission
Mi-17 Main transmision

Drive train system transmits torque from the two engines to the main rotor, tail rotor, oil cooler fan, and other main transmission accessories at reduced RPM.

Drive train system includes the following:
  • Main transmission
  • Intermediate gearbox
  • Tail rotor gearbox
  • Main rotor mast
  • Tail rotor driveshaft
  • Main rotor braking system
  • Drive system monitoring instruments.
Main transmission mounts on the center fuselage deck panel to reinforced frames No.7 and No.10.

Intermediate gearbox mounts in the vertical stabilizer at frame No.3.

Tail rotor gearbox mounts to the vertical stabilizer at the flange of frame No.9.

Drive train system monitoring provides instrument indications in the cockpit of the following:
  • Main transmission oil temperature and pressure.
  • Intermediate and tail rotor gearbox oil temperatures.
  • Main transmission intermediate and tail rotor gearbox chip lights.

Power Plant System

For this post we will look at the engines for the Mi-17.

Here we have 2 TV3-117VM engines that produce 2225 shp (shaft horse power) for limited power takeoffs with maximum power up to 2500 shp.

Left TV3-117 Engine

Right TV3-117 Engine

The engine comprises the following components:
  • An axial-flow 12 stage compressor;
  • An annular combustion chamber;
  • A 2 stage axial-flow compressor turbine;
  • A 2 stage axial-flow free turbine;
  • An exhaust unit;
  • An accessory drive box.
Engine operation is provided by the following systems:
  • Oil and breathing;
  • Fuel control;
  • Air bleed;
  • Starting;
  • Fire extinguishing.
